According to the description of Hou Han Shu, “Prior to or upon the time of the winter solstice, the man with a noble character life in quietness and peace. Civil and military officials stop handling administrative affairs. Choose a lucky time to start working then.” To celebrate the winter solstice, all the officials of the Han Dynasty would take a day off. In the Ming Dynasty, there was an old saying: “It’s winter solstice, every family pounds rice to make tangyuan.” On the day of the winter solstice, Yin and Yang alternate, and many people believe that they will grow up quickly after eating tangyuan, which is the origin of “Eat tangyuan and get another year older.” Lu You, a poet in the Southern Song Dynasty, also had the description in his poem: “Finishing the meal on the day of the winter solstice, and you will become another year older.”
Chinese eat tangyuan on the winter solstice as a long-term tradition. However, the method for making and eating Vietnamese tangyuan is a little different from that of Chinese. Vietnamese eat cold food during the Cold Food Festival. It can balance the heat that summer brings and keeps the body healthy. On March 3 of the lunar calendar, almost every family prepares tangyuan as the main offering to worship gods and pray for the ancestors to bless their families.
